In a world where monsters, spirits, and other strange creatures rule and humans are persecuted and hunted to near extinction, a forest Golem and a human girl meet. Somali and the Forest Spirit tells the story of the bond between a father and his daughter, of humanity, and what one will go through to ensure the happiness of the person they care for the most.
Somali and the Forest Spirit was incredibly enduring, the relationship between Somali and Golem is beautiful and moving. Watching an unemotional creature like Golem having to deal with a small, human child with a wild streak is hilarious and you will find yourself laughing plenty as their journey progresses. The most fascinating thing about Golem, is watching him grow into his humanity due to his love for Somali. It's so natural and it shows that it isn't the blood in your veins that is important, but the willingness to love and sacrifice ones own happiness, that makes you a good parent.

Golem dealing very patiently with Somali's wildness and need for freedom.
There is a perfect balance between the two character's temperaments, but you can see that they're both continuously learning and growing as the story progresses.

The adorable Somali.

The ever serious, but ever evolving Golem.
Even more interesting, is the way the other creatures talk about humans without ever knowing that Somali herself is a human. It's also worth noting how she changes people's lives without them realizing they are interacting with something they have been told to hate, fear, and kill all of their lives.
Somali and the Forest Spirit's animation is incredibly beautiful as well. From the environment to the characters, it left me wishing I could go there and interact with them. It drew me in and even more so when they would visit another part of the country, or a new city. Everything is so uniquely made and colorful, that I couldn't help but fall more and more in love with every aspect of it. Then of course, there are the voice actors. Both the dub and sub actors did an amazing job at capturing the essence of their characters and bringing them to life. Both sides of the voice acting world put a lot into their characters and should be commended for it.
I started watching Somali and the Forest Spirit due to its similarities with The Ancient Magus' Bride, and I am so glad that I did. There is so much to take away from this wonderful anime, like how love can change you, what it means to be a parent, and how you should never judge someone or hurt someone due to their appearance or differences from you. If you are a lover of fantasy or anime like The Ancient Magus' Bride, then I highly recommend it. Even if you aren't, I still recommend it because everyone should watch it.
