Kidow, an Exterminator, comes upon a dying man and his young daughter, Ilie after they are attacked by insect creatures known as Cagaster. The man's last wish is for Ilie to be taken to her mother. Promising to do so, Kidow takes Ilie in, watching over her and protecting her. All is not what it seems however and as forces moves against them, both Kidow and Ilie must face a truth they never saw coming and decide if living for the future is more important than dying for the past.
Cagaster of an Insect Cage gave me a lot of God Eater vibes; young male hunter, who is super powerful, with a traumatic past, has the entire weight of the world thrown on his shoulders as he fights monsters. This isn't by any means a bad thing, but between the two God Eater had better storytelling. There were some parts that I believe could have been omitted, like how the story constantly jumped to Ilie's new "bandit" friends. I didn't really feel any emotional attachment to them so even when they were in danger, I wasn't really anxious or upset. I felt like constantly jumping back to them slowed the pacing a bit and they could have been left out of the story all together.
That being said, Cagaster has an amazing, interesting story with incredible characters. Kidow and Ilie are especially well written, their emotional growth and their dynamic feels natural. Kidow is emotionally stunted and doesn't know how to interact with others or really understand boundaries, whereas Ilie is more mature due to how she was raised and due to her circumstances. It's interesting to watch them find a middle ground and the voice cast did an amazing job playing off their relationship.

Kidow, our seventeen year old, emotionally stunted bad ass. He's got some attitude, but once you get past that, he grows on you very quickly.

Ilie, our female protagonist who isn't exactly who helps Kidow grow and change throughout the story, while also dealing with her own heartbreak.

Also, because I can, my favorite character Ms. Mario. Complete bad ass who will try to kill you with a broom.
I also really enjoyed Cagaster's animation. I know some people are immediately thrown off by the CGI style animation, but since it reminds me of RWBY, I can't hate it. Also, you'd be doing yourself a huge disservice if you avoided it due to the animation. It takes just as much work and determination and dedication to created something on a computer as it does to hand draw it. There are also plenty of anime that are starting to blend the two in order to make things more smooth and streamlined. The coloration is beautiful, the character design is amazing, especially when you get to see what the Cagaster virus does to people.
If you are a fan of sci-fi horror with a little bit of romance and mystery sprinkled in, then I would definitely recommend giving Cagaster of an Insect Cage a watch. It has a lot to offer, even if it does have some bits and pieces that slowed it down at times. Be warned though that there is a small scene that made some people feel a little uncomfortable, but it adds to Kidow's character and helps you understand him better. Nothing bad happens, it just weirded some people out.
