Promare

Thirty years after Earth was hit with a devastating calamity that killed half the world's population due to mass spontaneous human combustion, a firefighting group called the Burning Rescue was developed. Among this group is one Galo Thymos, the world's number one firefighting idiot. Opposing him, are the Burnish terrorist sect Mad Burnish and their leader Lio Fotia. When both Galo and Lio realize that things are not what they seem, firefighter and firestarter must come together to save the world or watch it burn.

Promare is another brilliant anime created by Studio Trigger who brought us Kill la Kill, Kiznaiver, and Little Witch Academia. One of the founders, Hiroyuki Imaishi, also gave us Gurren Lagann. Promare is like an amazing mishmash of Kill la Kill and Gurren Lagann and it really uses both of those ideas to their fullest potential.

As with all Studio Trigger anime, it's weird, it's insane, and it's brightly colored. The animation is so stunning, the colors just hit you in the eyes, tantalizing your sight and the fights are so exciting. When Galo and Lio face off, it's everything you want in a back and forth battle. They snark at each other, showing of their strengths with each swing and shot. Every character has their own unique look as well and you can really see that Trigger was paying homage to previous works. Galo could be Kamina's twin brother and I feel like he's a perfect tribute to the character. It's like he was brought back to life for this anime and you can't help but love him. Kray very much looks like Ira Gamagoori and one of Lio's followers is very much a male Ryuko Matoi. I love that they take such pride in their previous works and enjoy showing them off.

Here is our idiot boy Galo, stubbornly facing down Lio. You can see Kamina is every facial expression and hear him in every word.

And Kray or Gamagoori if he decided to run a city.

Our other protagonist, Lio. The young, headstrong leader of Mad Burnish.

Promare's story is strong, interesting, and fun. Every character, from our main protagonists/antagonists to those that set in the background, are well written. The dialogue flows really well, especially between Galo and Lio and even more so when they're talking about how normal humans and the Burnish treat each other. Their evolution is so natural and I can personally say that I became invested in them almost immediately. The music and voice acting are everything you can expect from Studio Trigger. They both play a very integral part of the story, really driving it and the action forward. You feel the gravity of the situation our characters have been put in and the composers and cast help sell it so well.

If there is anything that disappoints me about Promare, it's that there aren't a million more episodes. From the action packed beginning to the slightly emotional ending, I was hooked and I can honestly say, I would watch it again. If you loved Gurren Lagann, Kill la Kill, and/or Kiznaiver, then I highly recommend you check out Promare. It's a little over an hour long and absolutely gorgeous in every way.
