In the year 2071, humanity is on the brink of total annihilation due to the outbreak of man-eating monsters known as Aragami. in order to combat these blood thirsty creatures, Fenrir, a military group, created the God Arc, a weapon that only a chosen few, God Eaters can wield. Among these is Lenka, a new type God Eater whose only wish is to wipe the Aragami off the face of the Earth. As threats mount from within and without the walls of Fenrir, and Lenka learns more about what it means to be a God Eater, will the Earth and humanity be saved or will the God Eater’s fall to their greatest foes.
God Eater is another instance of Ufotable really outdoing themselves. The very same studio who brought us Fate/stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works, Katsugeki/Touken Ranbu, and the new hit Demon Slayer, did a phenomenal job adapting God Eater into an anime.
As usual, the animation is gorgeous and clean, the fight scenes flowing beautifully from moment to moment, the facial expressions and body language conveying each character’s emotions with perfection. Every little detail is just so well crafted, it’s hard to take your eyes off of it. Their uses of color, especially during more intense moments, kept it exciting. I loved Lenka’s fight scenes the most, was absolutely captivated by them. It was almost like he was dancing and this is something that Ufotable refined in Demon Slayer.
And also, there's the music, which I can't believe I forgot. Ufotable does amazing things with music and you should definitely look up the soundtrack and listen to it for science or something.
The story is also interesting and never loses the energetic pace that it establishes from the beginning. You experience every moment to its fullest because of how well written it is and you never feel lost, even in the most chaotic of moments. The characters are also well written and believable. You relate to their loss and fear as they are thrown into this world of horrors that no normal person can survive in.
If there is one complaint I would make, it would be the way they introduced Alisa, how she was offended at someone wanting to rescue her. I understood why she didn’t want to leave the location she was in, but it’s pretty cliche when the strong female lead gets offended at being helped. It’s established pretty early on, that a God Eater on their own is generally one that dies and it seems like something she would already understand.
Other than that one little, small nit pick, I adored this anime and would definitely not only watch it again, but also recommend it to anyone who loves sci-fi action anime or who is just a fan of Ufotable. I had high hopes for God Eater and I wasn’t disappointed.
